What Water Pressure Does a Split-Type Unit Need?

Split-type units need steady incoming water pressure to refill the carbonator, maintain dispensing flow, and recover after repeated use. The exact requirement depends on the unit design, filter setup, pipe length, and number of dispensing taps, so the pressure should be checked at the installation point rather than at the building’s main supply.

Static Pressure Is Not the Whole Answer

Pressure measured when no water is flowing is called static pressure. It can look acceptable even when the system receives too little water during active dispensing. Dynamic pressure, measured while the tap is open, is more important for checking whether the carbonator can refill at the required rate.

Many commercial installations operate effectively with a controlled supply in the 2–4 bar range, equivalent to about 29–58 psi, but the final setting must follow the equipment specification. The 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code requires pressure regulation where building water pressure exceeds 80 psi, or about 5.5 bar, because excessive pressure can damage plumbing components and create unstable flow.

Check Pressure After Filtration

Filters, check valves, flow restrictors, and long pipe runs all reduce available pressure. A new installation may have sufficient pressure before filtration but lose too much pressure once water passes through the complete treatment system.

Split type water pressure should be tested at three points:

  • Before the filter assembly

  • After the filter assembly

  • At the water inlet of the main unit during dispensing

Consider Multiple Taps and Peak Use

A central system serving several taps needs enough dynamic pressure for simultaneous draws. A single tap may work well, while two or three taps used at once can reduce flow and affect carbonation recovery. This is particularly relevant in hotel breakfast areas, office pantries, and self-service stations.

Commercial water system installers should test the completed system during realistic demand. Recording inlet pressure, outlet flow, water temperature, and CO₂ pressure creates a useful commissioning benchmark for later maintenance.

Split type commercial water dispensers perform more consistently when water pressure is stable before, during, and after peak dispensing periods. Proper testing protects carbonation quality, reduces low-flow complaints, and supports reliable daily operation.
