Why Is a Split-Type Unit Noisy?

Noise from a split-type unit may come from the refrigeration compressor, condenser fan, water pump, vibration against the cabinet, or restricted water flow. The sound can become more noticeable after installation because remote equipment is often placed inside enclosed cupboards, back-of-house rooms, or ceiling spaces with poor ventilation.

Identify the Type of Noise First

A steady fan sound is different from a rattling cabinet panel, pulsing water line, or repeated compressor start. Identifying when the noise occurs helps locate the cause. Noise during dispensing may indicate water pressure or pump issues, while noise that continues when no water is drawn often relates to cooling components or vibration.

The International Organization for Standardization uses ISO 3744 as a recognized method for measuring sound power from machinery. A proper assessment should separate the equipment sound from the surrounding background noise instead of relying only on a subjective judgment at the installation site.

Vibration Often Transfers Through the Cabinet

Split-type main units can transmit vibration into floors, walls, pipework, or stainless steel panels. A compressor may operate normally but sound much louder when the unit sits on an uneven base or touches a rigid cabinet side.

Noise control checks should include:

  • Confirming the unit is level and securely supported

  • Checking that pipes do not touch metal panels

  • Inspecting fan guards and screws for looseness

  • Using suitable vibration-isolation feet where needed

  • Maintaining clear airflow around the condenser

Split type dispenser noise can increase when ventilation openings are blocked. The compressor then runs longer and the fan may operate at a higher duty cycle to remove heat.

Water Flow Can Also Create Sound

High inlet pressure, rapid valve closing, or poorly supported pipework may create clicking, humming, or water-hammer noise. Water hammer occurs when moving water stops suddenly and creates a pressure wave inside the pipe. A pressure regulator, correctly sized pipework, or a suitable arrestor may be required depending on the plumbing design.
